NC Choices is an initiative of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) that promotes sustainable food systems through the advancement of the local, niche and pasture-based meat supply chain in North Carolina. NC Choices provides information, technical assistance, educational programming and networking opportunities for farmers, extension agents, meat processors, buyers, distributors and consumers. Position Description:
The NC Choices Project Coordinator will: 1) work closely with the NC Choices Project Director, as well as University research and Extension personnel to provide farmers with technical support and resources to improve production, processing, and marketing of niche meats, including pork, poultry, beef, lamb and goat raised in pasture-based and other niche production systems in the local meat supply chain in the public/private sector; 2) develop publications, fact sheets, web-based tools, and other informational resources for producers and meat processors regarding best business practices, effective marketing , and regulatory and/or policy issues that affect the niche meat sector; 3) plan, implement and facilitate educational workshops and conferences for producers, processors, and buyers; 4) manage NC Choices¡¯ website and listserv; 5) prepare and implement presentations about niche meat processing and marketing issues for diverse audiences; 6) assist with the development of grant proposals, grant reports and project evaluation activities; and 7) develop and maintain relationships with local, regional and national partners and affiliates.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirement: A Bachelor¡¯s degree; preferably in Sustainable Agriculture, Agriculture Education, Extension Education, Animal Science, Agribusiness, Environmental Science, food and/or meat science or related fields. A combination of a bachelor¡¯s degree and experience and/or familiarity with the NC niche meat industry and supply chains is preferred.
Department Skills:
Candidates should have familiarity with a wide array of animal production systems, meat processing, food-service, marketing and food safety as related to meat or have relevant background and be able to quickly engage in these areas. Experience working directly with farmers is highly desirable as is experience producing, processing and/or marketing meat. Candidates should have experience in targeting messaging, crafting and delivering thematic messaging in sustainable agriculture (and/or local niche meat production).In addition, the candidate needs to be exceptionally organized and an excellent communicator.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills Training and Education:
The successful candidate will have experience working within the NC niche meat industry and will have a demonstrated ability to work with a broad array of collaborators including farmers, meat buyers, meat processors, and research and extension personnel. Experience in business development, event, workshop and conference planning is preferred. Fundraising experience also preferred. The individual selected for this position should be familiar with the NC niche meat industry and be able to deliver presentations to large and diverse audiences, be exceptionally well-organized, and a strong writer.
Other Work/Responsibilities:
Participation and collaboration with other relevant CEFS initiatives is expected, including data sharing, research collaboration and presentation of findings.
Salary: $47,500 including full-time NCSU employee benefits. Please note that this is a grant-funded, one-year position with a good possibility of extension through awarding of successful funding proposals.
